The arrival
Past the gate, the world seems to stay behind. Here on the south-west coast of Madeira, above Arco da Calheta, a path between banana and fruit trees takes you down to the house in the shade. The Atlantic opens up in front of you, and the garden closes in around every step. A refuge made for slowing the pace, being outdoors, and time for the two of you.

A Casa
The house
Warm wood, daylight, and windows big enough that the garden and the Atlantic are never out of the room.
The glass wall means you wake up with the sea in front of you, and the fully equipped kitchen opens onto the garden. Even the bathroom keeps the view, wide open over the Atlantic.
Outside, the cobbled path crosses the garden between banana and fruit trees, with the birds going the whole time. A place to slow down, breathe, and take your time.

Two cats came with the house. They keep their own hours: the warm stone in the afternoon, an appearance around dinner, gone again by dark. Say hello, or leave them to it — they'll take either.
A Piscina
The pool and the view
The infinity pool follows the line of the ocean, and the view opens out with it. Your eye runs along the water to the horizon, in a place built for resting.

A deck with a net floor slung out over the cliff makes the setting: the two of you, a long view, quiet, and the sea to yourselves.

The terraces below
On the terrace below, the property keeps going. This is the small farm: chickens and ducks you can feed, a corridor of passion fruit shading the steps, and beds of pineapple, mango, pitaya, fig, sugar cane, rosemary and cassava planted in the ground. While you're here you can pick what the land gives, and look after it too. Take the steps down through the socalcos — the hand-built stone terraces of this coast — to a level raised by several generations of work, and look out over the shore of black pebbles the tide keeps polishing.
